Peab rebuilds E22 outside Karlskrona

Peab has been commissioned to rebuild E22 between Lösen and Jämjö outside of Karlskrona. The customer is the Swedish Transport Administration and the contract is worth SEK 745 million.

A 15 kilometer stretch of the road between Lösen and Jämjö will be rebuilt into a freeway to improve traffic safety and passability. The current standard of the road is considered low for the amount of traffic on it. This will also improve the residential environment in Jämjö since through traffic will be transferred to outside the city and more noise barriers will be erected along this stretch of road.

Rebuilding the road will also create good conditions for farming and forestry machines in a well-functioning local network of roads as well as solve problems with flooding alongside the road. In addition, several new interchanges are planned to improve the safety and passability of pedestrians, bicyclists and mass transit.

“It feels very important to contribute to improving traffic safety and passability on this stretch of E22 for all kinds of traffic. We’re building for the future and everyday life where it’s lived, which is what we as the Nordic Community Builder do,” says Göran Wiking, Region Manager Peab.

The project includes 23 bridges, of which several have fauna passages to improve passability for animals. Some of the bridges are adapted to promote leisure activities in the area and to reduce the risk of accidents with wild animals the entire stretch will be lined with game fence.

“We bring Sweden closer together by shortening the distance between people and business. At the same time we create the right conditions for all transportation and travel to take place in the best and safest way, wherever you live, and with consideration to the environment and health,” says Johan Wolgast, Project Manager for the Swedish Transport Administration.

The project is a turnkey contract. Construction will begin in the spring 2022 and is expected to be completed in the winter 2024.

The project will be order registered in the first quarter 2022.
