Peab builds new National Archives in Härnösand

Peab has been commissioned to build the new National Archives in Härnösand. The customer is Specialfastigheter and the contract is worth SEK 800 million.

The archive building in Härnösand, which will be around 34,000 m2, will consist of an archive section and a section for administration. In addition to having a well-functioning design for the archives and offices, landscaping and the outdoor environment are very important. The project is also highly focused on sustainability.

The primary tenants will be the National Archives of Sweden and the Swedish Tax Agency. The National Archives of Sweden are in great need of more and better suited archive locations in order to absorb the enormous amount of archives federal agencies will be turning over in time. The Swedish Tax Agency is revamping its operations and therefore sees a need to gather its physical documents at one central archive. Building an archive is complex and the building must be protected against many things such as water, humidity, fire and theft.

“We’re both pleased and proud to have been chosen as the contractor for this community building project which is very important for both the local community and all of Sweden. The project makes high demands on us as contractors since the building will contain a large amount of unique documents that cannot be replaced. In the planning phase together with Specialfastigheter we have focused a great deal on analyzing solutions that meet these demands and planned for the approaching construction phase,” says Fredrik Timan, Region Manager Peab.

The project is being implemented in two phases where the first phase began in the autumn of 2022 with construction project planning and establishing the project’s budget. The second phase comprises production and starting up operations. Phase two will begin May 2023. The goal is for the new National Archives of Sweden to be ready to use during 2025.

The project will be order registered in the second quarter 2023.
