Peab begins on the foundation and framework of new laboratory facilities in Umeå

Peab has been commissioned to lay the foundation and erect the frame of what will be the new laboratory facilities at the University Hospital of Umeå. The customer is Region Västerbotten and the contract is worth SEK 180 million.

The contract will be carried out in different phases. With a feasibility study, planning and design completed both demolition and groundwork are underway and now Peab is starting on the foundation and framework.

The new laboratory facilities will be dimensioned to increase coordination and efficiency in operations. Modern and automated lab systems will make it easier to perform more analyses around the clock with higher quality and efficiency. The laboratory needs premises of approximately 26,500 m2 in total.

"I'm proud that Peab continues to be entrusted with planning such an important community service. We’ve worked together with Region Västerbotten for several years on various projects and this has been very developmental," says Susanne Hallberg, Region Manager Peab.

The premises will meet Miljöbyggnad Silver standards in terms of energy consumption, indoor environment and built-in materials as well as ecomomically good operations over time.

"We're looking forward to working well together with Peab to find good solutions for designing premises that meet the needs of our operations. Laboratory medicine is one of the most vital parts of the University Hospital of Umeå since it’s a key function for diagnostics and providing care to patients,” says Malin Viklands, Project Manager at Region Västerbotten.

The current buildings were built in the 1960s and are in great need of renovation as they are no longer practical or large enough.

The project is a turnkey contract and groundwork and demolition were started in 2025. Framework will be carried out in 2026. The goal is for the new premises to be ready for occupancy in 2029.

The project will be order registered in the fourth quarter 2025.
