Peab builds new traffic solution in Trondheim

Peab has been commissioned to build a new traffic solution in downtown Trondheim. The customer is Trøndelag county authority and the contract is worth NOK 347 million, about SEK 325 million.

Peab's contract includes the total renovation of a 700 m stretch of street. The street will be rebuilt with three lanes and a special mass transit corridor for trams and buses. New tram tracks with overhead contact lines, signal systems, pavements, bus stops and green areas will be built.

"This is really good news. The street has been in need of renovation for a long time and we’re now ready to deliver a new traffic solution with a high standard and good solutions for buses, trams, pedestrians and cyclists. This will be a significant boost for all of downtown Trondheim," says Jo Bernt Brønstad, Road Director in Trøndelag county authority.

The project has a clear environmental focus and emphasizes reducing carbon emissions – both in the choice of materials and during the construction work. Measures include the use of zero-emission machines for excavation and electric trucks for transporting excavated soil. The project also plans for a high degree of reusing excavated soil.

"This project is an expression of our commitment as a local community builder. We have worked well together with the county council and look forward to continued cooperation in creating a modern traffic solution that will benefit residents. For our part, the project has contributed to development and innovation, especially with regard to the high environmental demands. Now we're looking forward to starting the actual construction," says Anders Høvik, Manager of Peab's Norwegian civil engineering operations.

The project is a turnkey contract in partnering. Construction is starting up now in May and traffic is expected to reopen in June 2027. The project will be fully completed in the autumn of 2027.

The project will be order registered in the second quarter 2025.
