Peab expands prison in Haparanda

Peab has been commissioned to expand the prison in Haparanda. The customer is Specialfastigheter and the contract is worth SEK 263 million.

The prison in Haparanda, Sweden's northernmost prison, has existed since 1864 and needs to be expanded. Peab has been commissioned to expand the prison with a new residential building and to repair and rebuild an industrial building into an employment and administration building as well as construct new ancillary buildings and parking. The prison, which is a class 2 prison for men, will have 160 places after the renovation, which is double the current capacity. The tenant is the Swedish Prison and Probation Service.

"We’re proud to have been entrusted by Specialfastigheter to raise the capacity of the prison in Haparanda. This is a complex project in terms of both technical and security solutions with high demands for handling information securely on every level. Peab has extensive experience in this area, including several similar projects for Specialfastigheter all over the country," says Susanne Hallberg, Region Manager Peab.

The project is a turnkey contract. Production will start in the summer of 2026 and the work is expected to be completed in the autumn of 2028.

The project will be order registered in business area Construction in the second quarter 2026.
